As father to a son, I thought that I understood
how to raise a child well- prepared for their adulthood.
But I found that I knew little about some things that I oughter,
when along came our second - not a boy, but a daughter.
She's was gift in my life, she brought things unexpected,
I got a child that I loved, who must not feel neglected.
I wanted to protect her - from the hazards ahead,
But I learned to just hope - simply love her instead
Raising sons is quite easy, they mature slowly with age,
However, daughters are tricky, they’re an unwritten page.
Both are naughty at times – it’s just how children are,
But girls also have hormones, makes them harder by far
The wonderful thing about girls to remember,
They’ll become wife and then mother - like August, September.
It’s a miracle change, - a move like no other.
She will find her own way - helped by gran and her mother.
I didn't see when it was that my girl became daughter,
she just chose her own path - found a way I’d not thought of
I had to soften my world - let her become what she’d be.
It worked out well in the end - she’s become now what I see….
A clever wee soul, a child - woman I now notice
Whose slowly altered my world – brought her needs into focus.
She nudged me along gently – towards the thing she was after,
I’d acquiesce in exchange for her love and her laughter.
It was her way of achieving - one she’ll use all her days,
She learned as my daughter to smile - and use womanly ways.
Tilt my world, shift its balance - move around me, and pivot
Until she got what she wanted as I’d gve in, and I give it.
